Kashmir Tension: Tea Exports to Pakistan Stopped, Exports Down By 50%

Tea exports from India to Pakistan have dropped by more than 50 percent due to the tense atmosphere created after the Pulwama attack, the strike of Indian Air Force in Balakot and neutralizing the Article 370 related to Kashmir.

During the period of January to August 2019, the export of tea from India to Pakistan accounted for 31.4 lakh kilograms worth 48 million dollars (about 34 crores rupees). During the same period last year, the export of tea from India to Pakistan accounted for 61.7 lakh kilograms, worth $ 90.2 lakh (about Rs 64 crore).

In comparison, to the first 10 months of the year 2018, tea imports from Pakistan from India increased by 22 percent to around 13 million kg. According to the Business Standard, Pakistan is the world’s largest tea importer. Pakistan imports tea worth around $ 56 million every year, while Russia imports tea worth $ 49 million every year.
